Mahabharat tells the story of the throne of Hastinapura, a kingdom ruled by the Kuru family. The Kauravas and Pandavas competed with each other to occupy the throne. Even though the father of the Kauravas was older than the father of the Pandavas, Duryodana as the oldest Kaurava was younger than Yudistira as the oldest Pandava. Both Duryodana and Yudistira claimed to be the foremost heirs to the throne of Hastinapura.

When Bhishma asked Gandari to accept the proposal of his blind nephew Dhritarashtra, Gandari's brother, Sangkuni, became angry. Although he later agreed to the proposal, Shakuni vowed that he would destroy the Kuru family. Shakuni sowed the seeds of the climactic battle of Kurusetra starting from the youth of the Kauravas and Pandavas by poisoning Duryodhana's mind against the Pandavas. This friction reached its peak in the War at Kurukshetra. The fighting results in conflict between relatives and friends, also making family loyalty and dharma take precedence over justice.
